Building a Personal Brand
Working out the visuals
Admittedly, it took longer than I wanted to get from concept to print (thanks to 2 busy kids and work!). I have been pricing together a new logo, color palette, and cards over the last couple of months. I am in love with moo.com’s ‘Luxe Business Cards‘. This yummy paper is actually 4 layers compressed together, creating a thick and luxurious 32pt card stock.
Where do I start when designing a personal brand?
Well, I’m glad you asked… A few things to get your creativity flowing.
- What are the words and values that people would use to describe you?
- What is your specialty? How are you different from everyone else?
- What are your core values? What is important to you?
- What really moves you, visually?
Building a personal #brand starts with asking yourself a few questions and then the fun part – looking for inspiration. @hellojengriffin
Next, start with a little inspiration. Look through photos, magazines, fabric, things out in the real world. I started a Pinterest board to collect my ideas. Two tips when doing this:
- You can make your board private, if you prefer.
- Set a 60 minute timer (because that place is like a black hole!)
They key is not to get wrapped up in this activity forever. I would say spend no more than 2 hours total. When you are finished, narrow it down to the 10-12 inspiration images that really speak to you. Here are the ones that seemed to evoke emotion in me:
Now, it is time to pass it off to your favorite designer. Please remember the goal of sharing this board is to articulate your aesthetic and what resonates with you. It is not to duplicate or steal others’ work.
Now the exciting part – watching your inspiration come to life. You should have a new logo, font, color palette, and any supporting brand elements to get you started!
Here’s where I am at with my personal brand:
More to come. Until next time…
